Glossary: Sterling Silver

Measure of fineness, following the english “Pound Sterling”. This precious metal alloy must consist of at least 925 parts fine silver of 1000 parts in order to be called “Sterling Silver”,

Already introduced around the year 1300 the alloy still used in England today. In England, Sterling Silver is marked with a lion stamp, in Scotland the symbol is a thistle.
